How to Choose Wedding Rings

Throughout different eras and cultures, many traditions have been associated with marriage. And only some of them have maintained their relevance to this day. While not all couples think about breaking bread, no wedding takes place without wedding rings.
Regarding the tradition of wearing engagement rings, there is much scattered information, myths, legends, and assumptions, but one thing remains unchanged: this tradition has existed for centuries, and no matter how much the institution of marriage has changed, the ring remains a symbol of love and infinite devotion that both promise to offer each other.
It is believed that engagement rings come from ancient Egypt or ancient Greece. This is where the tradition of wearing the ring on the ring finger comes from. The ancient Greek writer Plutarch, referring to Apion's work "On Egypt", provides an interesting historical background on why it is customary to wear rings on the ring finger: "According to legend, the ancient Greeks wore the ring on the closest finger: on the little finger of the left hand. The same custom, it is said, existed among the Romans. The reason is that when performing a dissection and opening human bodies, according to the custom adopted in Egypt (which the Greeks call anatomy), it was discovered that a very delicate nerve came out of this finger that reached the heart, so it was considered appropriate to honor this finger as a kind of ornament, since it is more directly connected to the heart, which predominates in the body. The path through the left hand was a little shorter and in many countries it is customary to wear the rings on the left hand, which is, by the way, more comfortable from a practical point of view."
The circle, as a symbol of an infinite connection, has been present in many cultures and later took the form of a ring. Previously, ribbons, bracelets of a wide range of materials were used: leather, hemp, iron. Later, noble metals began to be used as a symbol of the bride's innocence.
By the way, the use of wedding rings for a long time was reserved only for women. Men began to wear wedding rings only in the 19th and 20th centuries. According to a more romantic version, this tradition became popular after the First World War. Soldiers wore the ring to remind them of family and home in difficult times. The more realistic version is that, in the early 20th century, American jewelry manufacturers began an active marketing campaign urging both spouses to wear rings. The idea gradually took hold and in this way has reached our days.
Gold or Silver: What Material Should Wedding Rings Be Made Of?
We hope that today, when choosing engagement and wedding rings, you are no longer guided by the need to highlight your material status and that your partner does not value the number of carats in the diamond. Yes, and diamonds are no longer a mandatory attribute. However, there is still the stereotype that wedding rings should be made of gold and nothing else. The most important thing about wedding rings is the symbol, not the material. Therefore, today there is a huge variety of engagement rings made of gold, silver, steel, glass and even leather. When choosing the material for the rings, we advise you to base your decision on your aesthetic preferences (some do not wear gold, others prefer it) and on the resistance of the material against wear, since wedding rings are worn constantly.
Here are some tips that we hope will help you in your choice:
- Silver is more prone to oxidation than gold. Over time it fades and can darken. But as far as engagement rings are concerned, with daily use they are slightly polished by themselves. To keep the rings looking their original appearance for longer, they must be taken care of: clean them regularly with a soft cloth or buy special products for their care and cleaning. But not everything is as terrible as it may sound. Slightly darkened silver even has a more noble appearance and does not darken immediately, but after several years. If you still want to update their appearance, we can polish all our jewelry for free at any time, this simple procedure takes no more than 5 minutes.
- On a shiny and smooth metal, whether gold or silver, scratches are more noticeable, which will inevitably appear over time. On textured or matte rings, they will be less visible. If you have chosen rings with a smooth and shiny surface, you can cover them with a layer of rhodium.
- Rhodium is a rare metal from the platinum family, which is characterized by its high resistance. It protects the surface of softer gold or silver against scratches.
- We do not recommend gold-plated jewelry for wedding rings. No matter how durable the layer is, with daily use it will begin to wear off and it will be necessary to renew it.
- If you want rings with embedded stones, it is best to opt for small stones with "closed", non-protruding settings. With daily use, large stones can get caught and cause discomfort.
If your choice has been a ring with pearl inlays, then you should make sure how they are fixed. Most of the time, pearls are glued with jewelry glue. And this method does not guarantee that the pearl will last longer than your marriage.
The design of men's and women's rings does not have to be identical. Men usually choose more robust ring options without inlays, while women opt for thinner and more elegant models with stones. All engagement rings from the sets we present can be combined with each other in any order, that is, you can order the rings from different sets and they will fit perfectly.
